It’s going to be admissions time soon and to help students make a decision, we listed down a few Pros and Cons of some of the reputed private engineering colleges/universities across the country.
Please note that our research is based on data gathered from various sources and feedback from some of the current and past students of these universities. During our research, we have only considered data about the Bachelors programs offered by these universities.
NMIMS UNIVERSITY (Mumbai) – Mukesh Patel School Of Technology Management & Engineering
PROS:
- Up to date curriculum. Syllabus is designed keeping practical applications in mind.
- Partnership with Fortune 500 companies
- 100% placements for all eligible graduates
- Opportunity to participate in international competition like MUN & NASA
- BOSCH- REXROTCH Industrial Automation Lab & other Industry Sponsored Labs
- Location advantage (in Mumbai)
- Mumbai is great location for both professional and personal growth
CONS:
- Expensive
- Living expenses are high
- Placements are mostly in IT companies so non CS and IT students find it difficult to secure placements in core companies
- Small campus
- Only one hostel for boys. No girls hostel.
SRM INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (Chennai)
PROS:
- Ranked 36 by NIRF. One of the top ranked private colleges in the list.
- 250 acre campus with state of the art infrastructure
- Placement rate is 100% with more than 600 companies visiting campus which include global companies like Microsoft, Google etc
- Semester Abroad Programme(SAP)allows students to completeone semester at top universities such CMU, UC Berkeley, University of Wisconsin, Northeastern University and a few others.
CONS:
- Faculty is average with most faculty being PhDs from SRM university itself.
- The chancellor was arrested for fraud in 2016 so some companies like Accenture don’t visit campus for placements
LOVELY PROFESSIONAL UNIVERSITY (Punjab)
PROS:
- Good faculty – some of them from IITs and Nits
- Huge Campus of 600 acres
- Great infrastructure
- Frequent Guest Lectures/workshops on latest topics/research
- Good extracurricular activities
- Decent placements. More than 550 companies visit campus, Cognizant being the biggest recruiter
CONS:
- Low student quality as getting admission to this university is fairly easy.
- Engineering college not ranked in the NIRF ranking
- Academic fees and Hostel fees are high
MANIPAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (Manipal, Karnataka)
PROS:
- Manipal is the only Indian private university that has been ranked among the top 750 universities in the world.
- Good Student to faculty ratio- better than many IITs
- A 188 acre campus with air conditioned class rooms, good infrastructure and labs
- Hostels facilities are very good. Offers both AC and non AC rooms
- Excellent Faculty and Labs
- One of the top research faculty among private colleges in India – Ranked 1st among Research Publications by private universities in India by SCImago Journal
- Excellent student clubs including ‘The Innovation Centre’ for budding entrepreneurs
- Has a semester abroad program and has many partner universities
- Dedicated placement team and very proactive in placing students into the profiles of their preference
CONS:
- Very expensive ( almost 15 lakhs for 4 years)
- Far away from City. Manglore is almost 1.5 hours away
VELLORE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY – VIT Vellore
PROS:
- One of the few universities which has a FFCS (Fully Flexible Credit System) where students can choose their subjects and faculty
- Many clubs and activities for students to participate in
- VIT is also one of the few universities in India eligible for the DAAD scholarships, which helps those who wish to conduct research work at a German university
- VIT also offers minors in the engineering disciplines, and their own version of a ‘double major’, where they allow you to major in one engineering and one management field.
- Excellent Faculty, Infrastructure and Placements
CONS:
- High Cost
- Too many students so hostels are overcrowded
SASTRA (Tamilnadu)
PROS:
- Good student quality as they are admitted based on merit.
- Good Faculty
- Good Placements
- Low fees – Cheapest among the top private colleges
- Tie-ups with more than 20 universities in abroad including Harvard University and UAB Barcelona.
CONS:
- Hostel facilities are not so good
- Infrastructure is old
- Far away from city and connectivity is poor – Nearest City is Trichy which is 40 km away
- Old methodology of teaching. Not up to date curriculum
- Less clubs and extracurricular activities
IIIT (INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ) Hyderabad
PROS:
- Excellent curriculum for Computer Science. Has the latest topics introduced as part of curriculum.
- Good internship and research opportunities
- 100% placement in CS and ECE. Salaries are equivalent to the IITs and in some cases even better.
- Global Placements – big companies like Microsoft, Google, Apple, Adobe recruit here
- IIIT-H also hosts T-Hub, which is said to be India’s biggest incubation center, in collaboration with Indian School of Business and Nalsar University of Law
- IIIT Hyderabad also offers MSIT program in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University, USA.
- Good sports facilities available in Gachibowli stadium located right next to IIIT
CONS:
- Small campus
- Not many extracurricular activities or student clubs
DHIRUBHAI AMBANI IICT( Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat)
PROS:
- Excellent campus and infrastructure
- Placements are good with global companies like Google , Microsoft, and Oracle
- Faculty recruited from IITs and NITs
CONS:
- NA
MIT Pune
PROS:
- Excellent infrastructure
- Lots of technical and non technical events for fun and learning
- Good placements and internships
CONS:
- Many Disciplinary guidelines – uniform on some days, prayer every day etc
- Not very high on extracurricular
NIRMA UNIVERSITY – INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (Ahmedabad)
PROS:
- 100 Acre campus
- Good infrastructure and Faculty
- Good placements
CONS:
- No hostels
- Strict attendance system ( 85% required )
- Very few extracurricular
- Expensive
SYMBIOSIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (SIT) (Pune)
PROS:
- Good infrastructure and labs
- Good placements include some global companies like Microsoft, Amazon etc
- The university conducts exhaustive Pre Placement Training with 3rd party trainers like FACE Academy, SKillrack, Aspiring Minds and conducts soft skills grooming sessions as well.
- Many student organization to nurture technical as well as personal growth
CONS:
- High fees
- Situated on the outskirts of Pune so travelling to city is tedious
- Doesn’t have many college festivals like other engineering colleges
- Placements are in mostly in IT companies only so non CS and IT students find it difficult to secure placements in core companies
