Back in the good old days, a job was considered ‘worthy’ enough, only when it was a ‘sarkari naurki’ – a government job. While the charm of the government job may have faded away, jobs in the government still offers decent salaries and steady career growth.
Recruitment in the government sector is handled by the Staff Selection Commission(SSC). SSC recruits staff for various positions in the various ministries, and several departments of the government of India and in subordinate offices.
SSC conducts several exams. The most popular amongst them being the
- Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGL) (for students who have completed their graduation) popularly referred to as the SSC CGL
This exam is for recruitment of Group-B and -C posts in various ministries/departments/organizations within the government of India. This is a 4 tier exams
- Tier-I and Tier II exams are computer based Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
- Tier-III is a pen-and-paper based exam that is descriptive in nature.
- Tier-IV is either a computer proficiency test, skill test, or document verification is conducted as per the post applied by the candidate.

- Sub Inspector in CPO (Central Police Organization) Exam
- Junior Engineer (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Quantity Surveying and Contract) Examination
- Junior Translators /Junior Hindi Translators Examination
- Section Officer (Audit / Commercial) Examination
- Food Corporation of India (FCI) Examination
- Lower Division Grade Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (LDC)

In 2005 Jay Rege, along with his wife Jothsna Rege, co-founded Academy One, a career guidance and study abroad counseling venture.
