By definition, Biotechnology is a broad area of biology, involving the use of living systems and organisms to develop or make products. So if you are interested in biology and related subjects, as well as a little bit of chemistry and chemical processes, then YES you may pursue BSc in Biotechnology.
But remember as such is a multidisciplinary subject and not a single topic in itself. Biotechnology as such covers a wide range of topics such as biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, bioinformatics, food technology and more. So if you are eventually willing to pursue a Masters degree specializing in one of these areas, ONLY then would I recommend pursuing a BSc in Biotechnology. If your objective is to only pursue your BSc in Biotechnology (and not your MSc), it may not offer you great career opportunities.
Jobs one can do after completing BSc – MSc in biotech are:-
- Jobs in companies (pharmaceutical, healthcare, food processing) or in government research labs as a research intern
- Clinical research jobs
- Academic jobs in private as well as government colleges and universities
- Quality Control/Analyst jobs in pharmaceutical or food processing organizations
- Production jobs in the pharmaceutical/food industry
- Data processing/analytics jobs for those specializing in bioinformatics
But what if after completion of my BSc, I realize that I am NOT interested in Biotechnology?
I understand that at times over the course of the BSc program, you may realize that you do not want to specialize in any of the topics in Biotechnology. Well in another blog, I have discussed options after BSc Biotechnology. Perhaps that might help.
