Careers in the Merchant Navy are divided into two main categories: deck and engine. Deck officers handle navigation, cargo operations, and safety of the ship while engine officers handle the operation and maintenance of the ship’s propulsion system.
- Deck Officer: Deck officers are responsible for the navigation and safety of the ship. They are in charge of the ship’s crew and cargo, and are responsible for ensuring that the ship arrives at its destination safely. To become a deck officer, one must have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) and then pursue a B.Sc. in Nautical Science or a B.E. in Marine Engineering. After completing the course, one must clear the All India Merchant Navy Entrance Test (AIMNET) to join the merchant navy.
- Engineer Officer: Engineer officers are responsible for the maintenance and operation of the ship’s propulsion system. They are responsible for ensuring that the ship’s engines and other mechanical systems are working properly. To become an engineer officer, one must have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) and then pursue a B.E. in Marine Engineering. After completing the course, one must clear the All India Merchant Navy Entrance Test (AIMNET) to join the merchant navy.
- Radio Officer: Radio officers are responsible for the ship’s communication systems. They are responsible for maintaining and operating the ship’s radio equipment and for ensuring that the ship’s crew can communicate with other ships and with shore-based facilities. To become a radio officer, one must have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) and then pursue a diploma in Marine Radio Electronics and Telecommunications. After completing the course, one must clear the All India Merchant Navy Entrance Test (AIMNET) to join the merchant navy.
- Ratings: Ratings are the unskilled crew members of the ship. They assist the deck and engine officers in the operation and maintenance of the ship. They are responsible for the cleaning, painting, and general maintenance of the ship. To become a ratings, one must have completed 8th or 10th standard and then pursue a course in pre-sea training. After completing the course, one can apply for various ratings positions such as oiler, fitter, wiper, etc. and take the All India Merchant Navy Entrance Test (AIMNET) to join the merchant navy.
- Master Mariner: The Master Mariner is the highest rank in the deck department. They are responsible for the overall management of the ship, including navigation, cargo operations, and safety of the ship. To become a Master Mariner, one must have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) and then pursue a B.Sc. in Nautical Science or a B.E. in Marine Engineering. After completing the course, one must clear the All India Merchant Navy Entrance Test (AIMNET) and gain experience as a deck officer before becoming eligible for the position of Master Mariner.
- Chief Engineer: The Chief Engineer is the highest rank in the engine department. They are responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of the ship’s propulsion system. To become a Chief Engineer, one must have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) and then pursue a B.E. in Marine Engineering. After completing the course, one must clear the All India Merchant Navy Entrance Test (AIMNET) and gain experience as an engineer officer before becoming eligible for the position of Chief Engineer.
It’s important to note that to become a merchant navy officer, one must pass a medical examination, meet the physical and eyesight requirements and have a good command of English. Additionally, it’s important to note that there are other career options available in the merchant navy, such as catering officer, electro-technical officer, and other positions.
It’s also worth mentioning that working in the merchant navy can be challenging, with long periods of time spent away from home and often working in difficult conditions. However, for those who are interested in a career at sea and are willing to put in the work, the merchant navy can be a rewarding and exciting field with opportunities for growth and advancement.
